Custom Paper Mapper now supports “16ai” style question numbers
**Custom Paper Mapper now supports “16ai” style question numbers**
QLAMaster exists to make exam-data workflows effortless so you can spend more time teaching and less time fighting spreadsheets.
Our latest update to the **Custom Paper Mapper** does exactly that.
---
### What’s new?
You can now enter **question labels exactly as they appear on the exam paper**, including combined part/sub-part labels such as:
* `16ai` instead of having to create separate entries for `16` and `16a`
* (and similar patterns like `16aii`, `16bi`, etc. where relevant)
The mapper will recognise these more detailed labels and treat them as individual questions or sub-questions when you build your custom paper mapping.
---
### Why this helps
This update means:
* **Less manual fiddling** – no more workarounds to represent sub-parts.
* **Closer match to real papers** – your mapping now mirrors the actual question numbering students and teachers see.
* **Clearer feedback** – when you generate QLA reports, question references line up neatly with the paper, making conversations with students and departments easier.
---
### How to use it
1. Go to **Custom Paper Mapper** as usual.
2. When adding or editing a question, type the label exactly as shown on the paper (e.g. `16ai`).
3. Map it to the appropriate specification code and marks.
4. Save, and your updated structure will flow through into your QLA uploads and reports.
Existing mappings using the older style (e.g. `16`, `16a`) will continue to work – you can update them over time if you want everything to match the new style.

### Got feedback?
If you spot any odd behaviour with particular papers or numbering styles, or if there’s another workflow we could streamline, we’d love to hear from you. Just drop us a message via the in-app support or your usual contact, and we’ll take a look.
- Custom Paper Mapper now accepts labels like 16ai, 16aii, 16bi, etc.
- You can enter questions exactly as numbered on the exam paper (no need to split into 16 + 16a).
- Each combined label is treated as its own question/sub-question for mapping and marks.
- Reports and QLAs line up more clearly with the actual paper numbering.
- Old mappings still work – this is an added option, not a breaking change.
